Miss Opportunity - Ch. 12.4

Three hours later, Mike-Mike and Tonja returned to his car after spending some quality time at his place. Quality, as in this was the best sexual experience they’d ever had in their lives.

Playing from the car stereo was the same soothing CD by Kem that they’d listened to earlier. Tonja insisted that Mike-Mike bring it out to the car since it contained her newest favorite song - Tonight.

“How do you want to play this out, Tonja?” Mike-Mike asked as he drove to her mother’s house where she would be staying tonight.

“I really don’t know how we should play this out, Michael,” Tonja replied from the passenger seat. She looked so sated and relaxed sitting there. All of her previous anger and frustration were gone. She’d also taken to calling Mike-Mike by his first name instead of his nickname.

“Well, the way I see it, we have three options,” Mike-Mike said. “Option one, we can pretend this never happened on account of the club’s no-fraternizing rule and go back to the way things were before.”

Tonja shook her head. “No, I don’t think I can ever go back to the way things were before. Every time I look at you from now on, I’m going to remember how good things were between us tonight.”

“You ain’t the only one.” Mike-Mike grinned, pleased that she’d had just as much fun as he had tonight. Who knew they’d be so compatible?

Tonja chuckled at his cheesy grin. “What’s option two, baby?”

“We can try to make a go of things ourselves, which means I move you and your daughter into a place of your own and erase all your financial worries,” Mike-Mike replied, hoping that she took that option because it was the one he really wanted.

Tonja shook her head again. “Unfortunately, no. I come from a broken home, Michael. I can’t take Rena away from her daddy, no matter how no-good he is. My mother took me away from my daddy when I was a little girl and I haven’t seen him since. I can’t do that to my daughter.” Even as she spoke her body tensed in her seat.

Mike-Mike outright frowned now. That was not what he wanted to hear. “That option came with me having to fire you anyway on account of the club rule. Since I know how much you like your job, I can see how that might not be the best choice for you after all,” he replied, trying to soothe the rejection he felt.

Yes, Tonja was staying with her child’s father for a noble cause. But it still hurt Mike-Mike to know that she’d rather be miserable with another man than happy with him. The fact that this man was packed with muscles from head to toe caused Mike-Mike to suddenly feel very self-conscious about his weight again.

As if she’d just read his mind, Tonja said, “Trust me, I’m only staying with Reno because of our daughter. You are a better man than him in every way, Michael,” she said, once again using his given name. “This one night that I’ve had with you was better than all the nights I had with him put together. That’s why I asked you to drop me off at my mother’s house, even though she agreed to baby-sit overnight. That’s why I’m spending the night there, too. I couldn’t tarnish the memory of this special night by lying beside another man. Not after I’ve been with you.”

Mike-Mike’s smile returned. “Which leads me to option three. We can pretend around everybody else that nothing happened between us, but still hook up on occasion to let off some steam like we did tonight. That’s if you ain’t got a complex about cheating on your no-good man.”

Tonja’s eyes lit up at that option. “Before tonight, I might have had a complex about cheating on Reno. But after he let me down yet again and after being with you, I realize that I need to grab whatever happiness I can while I can. Especially since I’m in for thirteen more years of grief with my daughter being only five now,” she said, frowning at the end.

“You make it sound like you’ve been sentenced to an eighteen-year prison term with this dude, Tonja. You sure you don’t want to take option two, baby?” Mike-Mike asked, extending that invitation to her again.

Tonja nodded. “I’m sure…for now.”

Accepting that with a nod, Mike-Mike said, “Either way, you still get that car I promised you.”

“Do I?” Tonja had wondered about that after she rejected option two for the second time.

“Yeah.” Mike-Mike smiled reassuringly over at her. “I’m a man of my word, baby. If I tell you I’m gonna do something, consider it done.”

Relief shrouded Tonja’s features. Her shapely body relaxed in her seat again. “Thanks, Michael. I can’t tell you how good it feels to be in the presence of a good man for a change.” She leaned her head on his shoulder and sighed. “A real good man,” she added more to herself than him.

It was at that moment that Mike-Mike decided to give Tonja a little bit more than a car tomorrow. From now on, he would do whatever it took to woo her away from her no-good boyfriend.

Although I don't condone cheating of any kind, I certainly understand why Tonja is doing so. I can't stand a sorry man! And Reno is sorrrr-ry!

I personally think she should just leave Reno alone, but if she did, he would only try to act like he's straightening up (perfect boyfriend/perfect daddy scam) just to keep and leech off her even longer.

Men like Reno always try to build up false hope within us just to keep us from leaving them. Been there, done that. Ain't never doing that again.

What's y'all take on the issue?

I agree with you 100%. Us as women have to realize that it is by choice that these men walk out of their kids lives.

When we leave that is all we do. Most women do not take their kids away from their father it was a choice that he made not to come see them.

Out of sight, out of mind.

These no good men decided that if they cannot have mammy they do not want pickney either.

These type of men make me sick and women need to realize that by staying with these type of men of any other kind for the sake of the kids is a death sentence.

You sentence yourself to a life of self hatred. You had to hate something about yourself if you do not think that you deserve happiness.

Is Reno a good father? I think not because a good father/boyfriend would make sure that his baby momma/girlfriend car is running smoothly, so that she can never be stranded with his child.

Ladies stp wasting your time looking for love in all the wrong places.

This hook up was just too sweet. Just sayin’…

i don't condone cheating either but in this case who can condemn the sista'? not me and are they even married? the guy is a bona fide bum and the sooner she is out of this no win situation with Reno the better for me. i would take my daughter and leave because the situation will not progrees but promises to digress all the signs are there. for her peace of mind and a promise of a better life of peace and happiness with her daughter i say she leave and like already but it's wise to also take some time before jumping into a relationship with michael, if things get to desperate her mother could help rite?

hope i make sense?

Personally I agree with you Suprina Men like that are going to do everything to keep their meal ticket Mike Mike can show her what she is missing and I hope he does but she has to get tired of the situation and realize the he may be her daughter's father but she can't make him act like a father. She may be and probably is doing more harm then good to her daughter by having this no good man in her life showing her daughter it is okay to be treated bad by a man which may cause her daughter to repeat those same patterns because she doesn't know any better.

I agree with you 100%. However, I would have jumped at the opportunity to possibly have something with someone who for whatever reason saw my need and tried to help with it. Michael (LOL) didn't have to do that and I think she's being a little too noble to try and stay with oh boy just for her daughter. Sometimes it's best to leave for the peace and mental stability of your children. As you can see I'm very passionate about this subject, sorry..:)

Also, nah just kidding...ha, ha, but I did want to say that re-reading the love scene with Kem playing was awesome. I wish the sex scene would have been a little longer but Kem helped to enhance the feeling, OKkkkk

Paula: I'm in agreement with you, girl. I'm one of those kids whose father stopped seeing her because he and my mother weren't together anymore. That's why I do not know who the brotha is today (he left that early on in my life).

Mama died without telling me much of anything about him (I guess the bitterness or disappointment was that deep). All I have is his name on my birth certificate and a few tidbits about his life from a favorite uncle who thought I should know something about my father before he died.

PS. That VI lingo came out of you then, didn't it? Mammy? Pickney? lol. I love it!

Sharon: I tried to make that hook up sweet...and loving because Mike-Mike needed a boost of confidence about his secret weight issues that even his boys don't know about (he acts super confident around them).

You're right about Reno being a bona fide bum. I want to write Tonja out of that situation quickly, but in reality, women don't always leave right away, even when a new and better option presents itself. Even when we can go back home to Mama.

I think it's all those emotional ties that we have with the current man. Ties that we're either afraid of cutting or really don't want to cut just yet.

Keep the comments coming, y'all.

Carmel B: Girl, you touched on some good points in your comments. Men like Reno do go out their way to keep their meal tickets. And the woman has to get tired of the situation and make that step to leave...whether there's a new man in sight or not.

Why should she leave?

You said it all in your next comments, Carmel B:

1. She has to realize that he may be her daughter's father but she can't make him act like a father.

2. She may be and probably is doing more harm then good to her daughter by having this no good man in her life showing her daughter it is okay to be treated bad by a man which may cause her daughter to repeat those same patterns because she doesn't know any better.

Ooo-wee, y'all are blessing me today! I hope other readers are getting blessed as well by all this good advice and commentary.

Jrboss: Don't apologize for being passionate about something you believe in. Plus, it didn't hurt my feelings none. I agree with you. Even the part about Tonja being too noble. But that's just where the sista is mentally right now. I'm hoping to change that. Soon? Don't know for sure yet. The story is changing before my very eyes.

Suprina

PS. I'm glad you added that musical touch to your reading experience. I kept playing that song over and over again as I typed out the scene in order to stay in the moment. Plus, I just like Kem's song. lol.

Longer love scenes will come with the main characters.

I think it is foolish to not just leave Reano and fully commit to a relationship with Mike-Mike. She is not being hosest with Reano, not honest with Mike-Mike, not honest with her daughter, but most importantly not honest with herself. I believe that this is based in fear. Fear of change. Fear of the unknown. Fear of bringing on her daughter what was brought on herself. But as someone said earlier... we can't force others see what is right in front of them, unfortunatly we have to wait for them to come to thier own revelation.

God Bless

Joy: Tonja is truly in a dilemma for sure. We'll all see how she comes out of it soon enough though.
